Welcome to the Adult
Literacy Center of the
Lehigh Valley (ALC), a
private, non-profit
organization founded in 1977
to address the problem of
illiteracy in our community.
ALC provides a variety of
services to enable people to
achieve personal goals
through literacy. Free,
one-to-one or group
instruction is available to
out-of-school youth and
adults, aged 16+ who would like to:
Improve their reading and
writing skills
Study English as a Second
Language (ESL)
Earn the GED® (Certificate
of General Educational
Development)
For thirty years, ALC has
worked to help the people of
the Lehigh Valley improve their
lives, the lives of their
families, and their community by
improving their literacy.
We’ve already touched the lives of
more than 12,000 of your neighbors.
90 million American adults
have difficulty reading a
food label, filling out
application forms, helping
their children with homework, understanding pricing
when grocery shopping, or
reading the local newspaper.
10.3 million foreign-born
residents of the United
States report speaking
English “less than very
well” or not at all.
