You Can Make a
Difference! Contact us at
(610) 435-0680 and ask to
speak to our Volunteer
Coordinator to find a
Volunteer role that’s right
for you.
The Literacy Center
has a volunteer opportunity
for you, regardless of your
age, experience, background,
or amount of time that you
can give. Our volunteers
include working
professionals, students,
retirees, stat-at home
individuals and parents, and
former literacy students.
They all have one thing in
common—the desire to make a
difference in their
community by contributing
their time and talents to
the cause of adult literacy.

Volunteer Tutors (FAQs):
- Do I need a
teaching background to
become a Literacy Tutor?
Absolutely not. While we
welcome those with
teaching experience, you
do not need teaching
experience, nor do you
need to know a second
language to tutor
someone in the process
of learning English.
- Do I need to go
through any training? If
yes, how long it and
what is the cost?
You must complete
approximately eight hours of
training that includes
practice and
demonstration of
teaching techniques,
lesson planning, and an
introduction to various
helpful materials. There
is no cost for the
training.
- What is the time
commitment?
We ask our volunteers to
meet with their students
a minimum of three hours per
week for a minimum of
six months. You are also
expected to report the
hours you meet with you
student and their
progress on a regular
basis.
- What happens if I
need to miss a meeting
with my student?
You or your student may
have valid reasons for
missing some tutoring
sessions, but we ask
that each party inform
the other in advance of
an absence.
- Where do I meet
with my student?
We provide a list of
available meeting sites
in an area which is
mutually convenient for
you and the student.
- What happens if I
don’t feel the match is
working out?
You should contact our
Volunteer Coordinator,
who will talk with you
about your concerns and
either try to help
resolve them or rematch
you with another
student.
- What kind of
support can I expect in
meeting my student’s
needs?
The Literacy Center offers a variety of
resources and programs
to support your work
including:
- A library where you
can find appropriate
material to use with
your student
- Additional
free-in-service training
sessions to learn new
techniques and brush up
on old ones
- Ongoing availability
of the Volunteer
Coordinator for advice
and support
